XMS 4 VMtools

Hi,

I have virtual XMS 4 installed by the EMC engineer and its VMtools is not running.

I've tried to reboot it with no results.

I've opened a case to EMC support with no feedback a part from "Contact VMware Support".

Since I don't have the root password for the virtual machine I'm not able to investigate more, even contacting VMware support.

Can you please help? Do you have the root password for the virtual XMS so I can investigate by myself?

Many thanks.

Matteo

We don’t allow the customers to install anything on the XMS (including the VM Tools). Think of it as an appliance rather than a regular VM.

Well, I find quite ridiculous that a solution hasn't been provided yet.

We have an outage in our QA environment. How do I shut down the XMS appliance properly, from VMware, without VmTools running? The only shutdown method I see is to log into the XMS and run "shutdown-xms".

According to vSphere, VMTools is install just not running.  Why is this?

If you can log into the XMS still, you can use the "shutdown-xms" command to shutdown the machine.

Don’t look at the vXMS as a virtual machine that you need to manage. As such, you don’t need the VM tools running inside the XMS. Think of vXMS as an appliance needed to manage the XtremIO array and if you need to shutdown the XMS (as an example), there are recommended ways to do that.
