Move data to smaller file system

Originally I provisioned a 500GB NFS file system for a service, they are currently using 230GB. I would like to create a new FS of 250GB and enable thin to make it look like 500GB and move their data to the new system and save the space to be used elsewhere. I want to do this in the background with the only host interaction being unmounting the old FS and mounting the new one when it is ready.

Obivously I don't want to use a block level copy, but a file level copy and I want to be able to perform the processing on the DM itself. I am using NFS only.

Any assistance is very much appreciated.

John

CDMS if you're not using multiprotocol. To avoid these situations I combine

different filesystems into one larger and use different exports and tree

quota for access and space management.

You could also use server_archive, which is probably easier:

    server_archive server_2 -r -w -J/dir1 /dir2

The -J tag retains CIFS extended attributes during the copy.

    Thanks for the contributions everybody.

I don't need anything to do with CIFS or multiprotocol since I am onlys using NFS. I guess the server_archive command is the consensus best way to go about it. I will give it a try, there seem to be a lot of options with this command.

If its just NFS data you can use rsync/rdist from an NFS client as well

with a fast NFS client it can be as fast as server_archive
