Hello all,

We currently have 3 SANs (CX-700, CX3-40, CX3-10) that we are combining into one SAN (CX4-960).  During this process we'll be moving everything over to the new CX4 via SANCopy.  My question revolves around the construction of the RAID Groups.  We currently have a very complicated arrangement of RAID Groups ranging from 2 disk mirrors for trans logs, to 5 and 9 disk RAID 5 sets to 14 disk RAID 10 sets and so on and so on.

So, I'd like simplify all of that and instead make much larger RAID 6 sets (43 or 58 disks).  I just want to know if this is a really bad idea, and if so, why.  It just seems like sizing LUNs would be much easier and I can get much more use out of certain features like over-provisioning.  As well, I would think this to be the best way of performance leveling.  If anyone can offer any points to consider as I move forward it would be very useful to me.

The new SAN was purchased with ~20 DAEs and disks include SATA, SAS, and SSD.
