Like any system, a tech savvy customer can open the case and replace components. This will not effect your contract.
HBA's and NIC's are classified as filed replaceable components. These parts will trigger a FE/CE per your service contract. If you would rather replace them yourself, Data Domain engineers will send you just the parts.
I agree with this statement 100% - with regards to the listed CRU components.
EMC state that CRU's are limited to only these components.
Not all HBA replacements or new installations are straight forward and all HBA replacements on all DDR models require an outage, also an understanding of how many cards can be installed and in which slots to install them.
I recommend using a qualified EMC Field resource to do any work outside those listed CRU components.

If I remember correctly, DD990 has 4 IO slots which can be either HBA or NIC. Those you can install or remove and place something else instead.
