2.0/firewire

Hi all.

  I have ---Dimension 4100 P3-800meg. Windows ME.

Can I install a 2.0/firewire card. I thought that I read somewhere on one of the threads that it wouldn't work.  TIA.

i don't know about ME ... but try to get a copy of windows xp ... put service pack 1 on it ... and then you'll have usb2.0 for sure. Your pc is definetely good enough to be able to run windows xp. (i ran it once on a P2 400Mhz ^^)

USB 2.0 is a hardware feature, not a software feature. Upgrading to Windows XP will NOT magically upgrade your USB 1.1 ports to USB 2.0.

You can install a USB 2.0/Firewire PCI card to have a few 2.0 and firewire ports, but the original USB ports on your system will remain USB 1.1. Here is a link to one that is compatible with both your system and with Windows ME:

    Good luck with the upgrade!

Firewire with Windows ME could be evil, Windows ME is a very buggy and unreliable Operating System, my recommendation to you is to go get yourself another O/S and either reformat it or upgrade if possible.

I have almost an identical system to yours except mine is 1GHz.

    I bought a USB2/Firewire card from Newegg.com last year.
Installed just fine. I connected up my new Panasonic camcorder with Firewire Out
and was able to capture some video using Windows Movie Maker.
