beeps
When I start up my computer it beeps once, then a pause then beeps 3 times a pause then beeps one more time. When it boots it goes from the dell logo to the windows 98 logo and doesn't show that screen of information anymore. when its done booting it runs very slow and eventually locks up. Could you please tell me how I can fix this problem?

The beepp codes that you have listed deal with the memory and you should start by removing and reseating the RAM to clear this problem.
- Yes, it would if one of your present memory modules is failing. If you have more than one memory module try removing one and boot up. Then relace the first and remove the other. If the machine boots normally with one of the modules removed than it would be safe to say that it's faulty.
- I have a similiar problem with my pc right now....its a dell dimension xps B866.....everytime it shuts down i cant get it restarted. I go to restart it and i hear 3 beeps when it starts running....and nothing happens.I tried resetting the memory modules also....it doesnt work.What kind of repairs should i look into? or what can i do to repair my pc?any idea how much it will cost to get it running smoothly again?thanks.
Omegaflow, if you have more than one memory module try taking them out one at a time and boot the system with the remaining module(s). Do this for all the modules. If the system successfully boots with one of the modules removed then suspect that module as being bad.
Also considering the age of your XPS B system I would replace the motherboard battery as well. A failed battery can cause a variety of boot up problems as well as erroneous error codes. A new 3-Volt, CR2032, coin cell battery can be purchased for around $3 (US) and is available at any Radio Shack, computer stores and most discount stores. Click here for the on-line version of your model's User Guide and the section on how to replace the battery.
If none of the suggestions above resolve the problem then look at the rear of the system to see if the diagnostic lights are indicating an error code which may further help find the problem. Click here for the diagnostic codes from the User Guide.

by memory chip do you mean a new rimm?
I currently have 2 rimms in my computer...doesnt help to reset them.
Im pretty sure the diagnostic lights read 2 are yellow and 2 are green....meaning i should try reset the rimms...which i did...but it still didnt work.
Maybe it is the battery majestic....i know where that battery is located on the board.
or maybe i need a new memory chip....where is the memory chip located?
