Upgrading RAM - having problems inserting module

I am operating a Dell Dim 4500.

One of my RAM slots (previously unused) is not receiving a 512 module.  I've had to put it in the first slot, where the 256 was.  Neither the 512 or the 256 will actually go into the 2nd slot.  I'd like to use both.

What am I doing wrong?

    Yes.

I successfully replaced the one in the first slot.  I'm assuming both slots work the same?

If so, I may have some sort of defect.  Not sure them what I'd be able to do, short of getting it looked at.

It's been enough trouble at this point, that I'm thinking of just buying a 1GB module for the one slot that works.  I'm getting fed up.

Did you open the clips on both sides of the socket?

I would look real close to see if there is a piece of or chunk of plastic in the contacts in the
memory slot. The 4500 does not support a single 1G memory stick.

This would be really ODD, but are you sure that they aren't different types?  SDDR or DDR?  I would suggest trying the different type in the 2nd slot.

I have tried both, in both slots.    Each works in the first, neither fits into the second.  I know it sounds odd - can't figure it.
