Upgrading to Win XP

I have just upgraded to winxp from WinMe for my Dell Dimension 8100. I downloaded the current drivers and bios. Upon completion, I checked the system Icon in the control panel and went to the device manager and noticed that I had the yellow question mark of other devices. Once I clicked on the plus sign and seen that there was a "unsupported device" error, which was not there when I had Win Me before the upgrade.

In the weeks following of not finding out the unsupported device was, I called the dell technician and he told me download the Dell Chip Set update, which has the date of november 2000, version A05. Now I just bought the system in August of 2001. I asked the tech that if the chip set file was dated november 2000 and I bought the system August 2001, should have that updated already been applied? The answer I got was no. The tech told me that the nov. chip set would have the WinXP drivers. Well, Well, Well, I downloaded the chipset and guess what? I will not run in the WinXP environment.

Is there anyway to get around that without losing my information that I have created in WinXP. Going back to WinME, I will lose my data.
