Did you check your screen saver/hibernate/power options? It doesn't sound like a mouse problem it sounds like your moniter is set to shut off or it's on sleep or hibernate. Right click on desktop. Go to Properties or Personalize and check all the settings and power options.

If hitting a key on the keyboard doesn't bring your screen back then it's definitly not the mouse. Only thing I can think of wrong with the mouse is if there's some timer on it that shuts it off to save the battery..BUT your keyboard would still work.

try: Control Panel > (Printers & Other Hardware) > Mouse > Hardware > Properties > Power Management > check "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby".  The process is the same under "keyboard" to allow the keyboard to resurrect your system.  Hope this helps.
