700m Memory Install
Hello,
First time on the forum. Hope this is not too easy of a question for you folks - but here goes. I just received a 1G memory module for my Inspiron 700m Laptop. I uncrewed the memory plate on the bottom of the laptop and stared at the memory module I was to replace. The angle at getting the old 256K module out seems very tight. As I am not a techy, I am afraid I may break the thing getting it out. Can anyone offer any suggestions to help me through this install. I don't want to break anything and have to deal next with a broken laptop,
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

It can be daunting if it's new to you, let me give you some personal experience. You've probably read the instructions by now and follow the safety advice to the letter, ground yourself, remove the battery, unplug, etc.
With a finger nail, never a tool, gently push the clips on either side of the ram, you'll find the ram is spring loaded and *wants* to pop up from it's place. It will go up to about a 40 degree angle. Grasp it by the edges and pull it out at the same plane, it takes a bit of a tug.
Putting in your new ram: There is a slot on the bottom of the ram where the connectors are, there's a corresponding slot on the board, line those up and gently lay the ram in place so that the slots are even and the ram is even all the way across. The ram will be at a 40-45 degree angle.
Here is the scary part, it takes a bit of force to push the ram into it's slot, push with steady pressure until you can no longer see the gold connectors. If you let go of the ram at this point it will just be sticking up in the air at a 45 degree angle from the board.
Once you've done that, press the ram, by the edges, down towards the clips and it will "snick" into place. It's done.skidrofuzzy

Why on Dells home and home office site for the 700m under "tech specs" does it state:SDRAM Configuration: 2 SoDIMM slots (one user-accessible)
Does this mean you can only upgrade one DIMM or what?

Woah, I hadn't seen that, it was my understanding "ram is user replaceable", I didn't know there was a differentiation of user accessability. Maybe a mod can clarify and how does putting ram under the keyboard affect the warranty?Richard Carver

This is from the User Manual for the 700m showing the user upgradable items, including the memory under the keyboard.

they are both user accessible, but the one they are talking about requires only taking screws out. Since the other is under the keyboard, I don't think dell calls this user accesible since you have to remove other components in order to reach the other memory slot.Guys,
Check this out...
I've noticed that the integrated sound isn't good on the 700m

The speakers aren't too hot but I bought some Aiwa NC portable phones for flights and the sound reproduction in those will bring a tear to your eye it's so good. :)
I don't know about the recording problem as that's not something I do but that guy really seems steamed!
