BIOS update
I have just bought a new battery for my Inspiron 8200, and Dell sent me a BIOS update on CD.
What is to be gained by my installing this? My computer works just fine at the moment.

Different BIOS versions have different battery charging algorythms. It is standard practice to send a BIOS cd with a battery (even though they are almost always not the latest version!!
). If you are at/above/using the latest BIOS, don't worry.
