Home/Office Desktop Scheme

Are there negatives to be expected by changing my 2.0ghz P4 M Inspiron 2650 power scheme to Home/Office Desktop, from Portable/Laptop?

My understanding is that the battery use of the laptop will be unchanged, but that the AC use of the laptop would then always be running with full CPU power.

I've noticed that currently DVD ripping (with high levels of compression) start out at a relatively slow rate, and gradually build up to a much higher rate. My desktop starts with the higher rip rate, so I'm wondering if the Portable/Laptop setting might be the reason for this.

I'm guessing this would result in the cooling fan being on more of the time, wonder about possible overheating problems, and wonder if the extra heat would affect battery life. I normally place the machine in standby when I leave it, so it would not be running at full power except for when I'm actually using it.
