keyboard

I just recieved a new Latitude laptop. I find that when typing the cursor will reset its location by itself (e.g., in the middle of text already typed, in the address box of an e-mail message while typing the body of the message, etc.). It happens in any application (even in this message). I am not hitting the touch pad pointing device, it was disabled as an initial solution to this problem. As far as I can tell I am not hitting any extraneous keys at all. Of course this never happens when the IT guy comes to look at it. Anybody else have this problem??? Any suggestions??

do you mean your cursor auto-locates itself to [ok] buttons if and when they popup by themselves ?

if so, there is an option if the mouse settings

for my alps/logitech mx500 mouse driver combo screen,
    its under Pointer Options "tab"

its called "snap to" (automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box)

if that isnt what you are talking about - plz try to re-describe the problem to us

No, I know about that option, we have substituted an external keyboard and the problem doesn't occur. This seems to indicate a defective keyboard on the laptop itself. I'm looking to buy a personal laptop, based on this experience it won't be a Dell.

I think I'm having the same problem as you and it's driving me crazy.  If I'm typing an email and I hold down my Shift key for more than three seconds before typing, it jumps my cursor up to the top or wherever.  And in the special software that I have for work, if I'm in it, there are a lot of functions that require the Control key plus a letter in order to do them.  If I hold the Control key down for more than three seconds without completing the function, it jumps my cursor up to the top somewhere, and sometimes it highlights text on its own and deletes it!  I can't have this with court documents and I was wondering if you found any answers to this problem, other than it's a faulty keyboad.  I also have a Compaq and it doesn't have any problems.  ??  This Dell Latitude is relentless!  Thanks in advance......

Not fixed yet...I have been using a portable keyboard and the problem doesn't occur. We replaced the keyboard on the laptop...same problem. Dell came in and replaced the mother board and the keyboard again...same problem, so I'm back to the portable keyboard and convincing a skeptical IT guy...I used to have an IBM T21, never had a problem, and that was a used computer....I hate this Dell!

I noticed a reply by 'freonchill' that looked promising, and didn't see anyone acknowledge it as having worked or not:  besides acting as a mouse, the pointing stick in the middle of the keyboard taps as a mouse button.  Other than this, I can think of no reason why your problem would occur.  It's certainly unusual.

I ignored freonchills post because it is not the problem. I have used a laptop with the stick mouse for years and have never had a problem like this. It is clearly a defective computer...the hard part of course is getting Dell to respond. I am really wishing for my old IBM T21.

I would have to agree with MartinAnderson.  I don't even use the pointing stick to move the cursor around.  When this happens, the only key I'm pressing down is either the Shift key or Control key.  One time I just moved my laptop and it highlighted text and deleted it!  All I did was move it from my lap to the table!  It's starting to sound like a keyboard problem, and I do regret buying a Dell.  I have a Compaq also and it's great.  But I need both computers for my work and this is very disappointing, let alone frustrating.....

I must admit, the old IBM I used to have was a workhorse...couldn't kill it (until I dropped it and trashed the screen....).

The only other thing I can think of is a heat problem causing the touchpad to do weird stuff, but that would account for neither the deleting of text nor the shift and ctrl problems.  Good luck w/ Dell.
