L702X Bios password
First post so be gentle :-)
I am the registered owner of an XPS L702X (and also the second owner)
The first owner (original purchaser) doesn't know what a BIOS is let alone how to set a password for it. He assures me that he has never messed around in the BIOS.
I cannot get into the BIOS as it requires a password. I spent 40 minutes on the phone to a very nice fellow yesterday but I fear that he was not fully understanding as he kept referring to his supervisor.
Anyway, it ended up with him saying that I required a new motherboard at a cost of over £400 fitted. I'm honestly flabbergasted.
Is there anyone here who might be able to offer some help or advice?
For info, the service tag is the newer type.

When I press F2 I am greeted with a message asking for a password and then it also give an 8 digit alphanumerical hint. Is that the prompt you are talking about?
If the original owner didn't set the password - and you did not -- then the diagnosis is likely correct. The mainboard needs to be replaced.
The cost varies from location to location -- in the US, it is indeed about $300-400, and may be more depending on labor rates where you're located.
Yes, that's the one. Did you just receive the system, or have you had it a while?
If you just received the system, and your friend cannot provide the password, ask for a refund.
If you've had it a while and the password suddenly appeared,
(1) Someone who had access to the system set the password or
(2) As Dell has told you the mainboard is bad.

If it is asking for a BIOS password then one has been set. My guess is that it was like that from new. There are more than a few tales of exactly the same thing happening to others
