Regarding the overheating problem

Howdy,

I just got my 5100 last week and am quite happy with the machine. It's my first laptop, so I am enjoying not being chained to a desk. However, straight away I thought the fan placement/design was a bit odd. So, I have a small block of wood that i prop the back of the machine on (the little rubber feet rest on the wood)

I wanted to make sure i understood the weekly-blowing-of-the-dust ritual, however. Can I use the compressed air that comes in the cans? And then I simply blow it into the back air vents, correct? How long a burst of the air?

    magoogirl - according to the author of the air-blowing ritual, just a shot or two (1-2 seconds) should do it. Put your mind at ease though. I have been running my 5150 pretty hard since July, no problems. I took it apart yesteday to check if there was a "dust clog". The entire fan / heatsink area was clean as a whistle. A little maintenance can't hurt though. Enjoy your new machine and stop worrying! Glad to see you are going to take care of it!

    Glad to hear you've had no problems because i use my pc's very hard as well.... they are on nearly all day long as my work is based on the computers/internet. :)

    I too have never had any problems, and mine has been on nearly all day since i received it over 6mths ago.... I dismantled it a few weeks back and my fan and heatsink were caked in dust, but a quick blast of air and everything was clear again, and the fan def comes on a lot less now.
