Upgrade gone bad
Hello,
I recently went to convert my Dell XPS L702X laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. I did a clean install as I would normally do, less issues that way. Though I have run into a great big issue right now. I went to install the NVidia drivers and was dumped out of that install with an error that the Intel drivers needed to be installed. So I grabbed the drivers disc and put it in the computer, and installed the Intel HD driver. Unfortunately this has led to the big issue. In the middle of the install the screen flashed a few times then kicked me to the login screen. I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and entered the username and password, the screen flashes at me then kicks me out the login screen again. I restarted the computer from a cold boot, and tried again, no luck same issue. I then tried safe mode, which I was able to install the drivers, but when I go back to the normal login it flashes and kicks me out again. Anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?

Well I have check the driver downloads and even selected Win 8, but all the drivers they have on the website say supported by Windows 7, nothing about Windows 8 or 8.1. I unfortunately do not have a copy of Windows 7 to reinstall, as I said I do clean installs, which means I wipe the drives. In 23 years of doing installs like that I have never had an issue with driver compatibility when doing it this long after a OS was released. I can't even say that I have ever done a OS upgrade within 3 months of a release, always wait for whatever issues might come forth first. The last time I ran the Upgrade Advisor on the laptop it said that the only incompatible things were the Dell Stage and something else, but the Intel HD drivers and the Nvidia drivers were good.

You have to get the win 8.1 drivers from Dell. Don't use the driver disk since that is for win 7 and will install the wrong drivers. Windows 8.1 might have some of the drivers and install them automatically. Reinstall windows 7 and start over by running the Windows Upgrade assistant. That will tell you what drivers you need ahead of the install.
