I am experiencing a problem with my dell P992 monitor. I got the monitor in February along with a dimension 4400 computer equipt with a Geforce 3 Ti 200. The problem is that when i power up the monitor, all that happens is that the power light blinks between green and amber and a high pitched chirping noise is heard. The actual computer boots up fine. To troubleshoot, i powered down the monitor, unplugged the video cable from the computer and try again. Same thing. Then i tried a different power outlet. Same problem.
Based on forum messages, it seems that others have been having the same problem with the P992. One person said that before the actual faliure occured, the monitor would realign itself every time he turned it on. I too have had that problem before hte faliure. Also, i have been hearing that people are on their 3rd or 4th shipment of P992 monitor; i do not want to go through that hassle as well.
So my question is: What should I do? send it in? has anyone been able to fix the problem on their own? And why is it that dell has not properly addressed this issue in the past?
My p992 blinks green and emits high pitched sound. No test pattern after disconnecting from tower. Power cord switched to know good one and same result. ??? Help me too. Thanks.
The exact same problem happened to my P992 3 days ago. That is, the power light blinks and there is the high pitched chirping. I also experienced the screen reformatting itself about 1 week prior to the monitor dying. Unfortunately, there is no way to run the monitor diagnostics as suggested since the monitor doesn't turn on!! Unfortunately, I only purchased the 1 year warranty since I've typically had good luck with Dell Equipment. Wouldn't you know that the monitor died in its 13th month. I was less upset until I read that many other people have had the exact same problem with these monitors.
The problem is either a bad batch of 992monitors or all of them are do do. Here are the reasons why:
So many posts with identical problem
I went throught all the procedures with my Dimension 8200, Trintron p992, powered down, removed cord to tower, powered on just monitor, no luck.
I installed 992 on my XPS system. No luck.
I installed p990 from XPS system on 8200. That worked, and the old monitor is several years old.
I too am just out of warranty. If I hadn't read all these simialr experiences, I would accept it as bad luck. Dell, you owe us! I have 3 Dell systems in my household and am a loyal customer. I consider it a criminal act to not respond or act appropriately when there is a major defect in hardware.
All us loyal customers out there (please respond if you agree) should be given 2 things if you are truly an honest fair corporation:
New monitor, regardless of warranty period.
An explanation of exact cause of this problem. Surely you know by now and if you do not you are acknowleding major incompetence.
Looks like I am having the same problem. Dell P992 Trinitron monitor power blinks green and emits a high-pitched chirp. Screen remains black. Unplugging the video doesn't change anything. Unplugging the power cord causes it to still chirp for a little while, until capacitors apparently lose their charge. Powering the computer off and on doesn't matter. Has anyone received a satisfactory reply from Dell on this problem? The one I saw posted on this thread was worthless.
Yes, many people have this same problem. However we've yet to hear answers back from Dell as to why this is happening (unless we all missed the post/thread).
Confirm - the exact same problem with the P992. All tests performed; all connections triple checked. This is definitely a monitor failure... Like many of you, I am 13 months into ownership (out of warranty) and on my 5th Dell system including 4 desktops and a notebook (not to mention the 4 or 5 relatives have bought on recommendation). Dell - what is our recourse?
wow, i cant believe people are only NOW responding to my post, since it has been 4 months since i originally posted...
But, in case you guys are all wondering, i eventually called dell, was interrogated by their "award winning" service for 50 minutes, and accepted the fact that my monitor was dead. Yes, that green chirping is a dead monitor. It is the sound of inevitablilty.
SO, if you have this problem set aside a good 90 minutes of your life, go call up dell, whine like a baby, and force them to send you a new monitor. My monitor broke down 11 months into my 1 year warranty, so its possible that the life expectancy of these monitors is 1 year. I firmly believe dell should send you a new one, even if you are out of warranty.
I experienced the same problem. My monitor made it a little over 2 years before it died. I've never had a monitor die on me before and I've had some monitors for more than 5 years.
