U3821DW, OWC Thunderbolt Dock, Mac M1 issues
I have two M1 Macs (one Pro, one Air), which I want to connect to my U3821DW. I have installed the drivers available on the site, as well as the firmware updates, and restarted both laptops.
- I'm trying to connect the Pro through my OWC Thunderbolt dock using the USB-C, mainly because that is what I've been doing with my previous monitor and I have ethernet etc running through that.
- I'm attempting to connect the Air via HDMI using the Apple USB-C to HDMI dongle.
For some reason I can't figure out, none of these are working. Neither Mac will connect to the U3821DW through the OWC dock, or through the HDMI dongle.
- I can get them both to connect directly to the U3821DW with the Dell provided USB-C cable, but NOT if I use that same cable to connect through the OWC dock.
- If I connect the Dell provided HDMI cable to my Pro, the laptop registers the U3821DW and shows it as a display, but the screen on the display is black.
My preference would be to connect my Pro via the OWC because it's the only way I know of for me to access the Ethernet connection. But I don't understand what's happening here. Why won't it connect through either OWC dock or Apple USB-C to HDMI dongle? Why would it be picking up on the HDMI but the display remain black? Someone help please! I need to figure out how to connect both of these Macs simultaneously to the U3821DW, as it's one of a few reasons I chose this monitor.

[SOLVED] I switched the monitor from HDMI 2.0 to 1.4 aaaaaand now it works. I still don't really understand why. But there it is.

More clarification: it seems that I managed to get the display to show the HDMI on Air, but at no more than 50% of the PDP screenshare. If I go above 50%, it either flickers or is completely blank (but still registers in Display Settings).
I tried this with the dongle on both the Pro and Air, and directly into the Pro without the dongle - in all of these setups, I get the same behaviour from the HDMI connection: flickering or blank above 50%.
So it seems like an HDMI issue, not one with the Pro, Air, or dongle. I'm using the Dell-provided cable so I'm inclined to think it's not a cable issue, but there's no way to know.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening and how to get the monitor to pick up the M1s in full-screen without flickering? I can use any of the other connection formats except the Thunderbolt, as that's running my Pro through the OWC dock.
