Would appreciate assistance on how I can connect my Inspiron 6000 wireless laptop to printer that's on my desktop. The router is connected to my desktop. The printer is HP Officejet R40. I have both computer setup to share printer.
When I look to add to a printer it goes through the "Add Printer Wizard" then it wants me to identify the printer ?? But the printer is connected to my desktop computer and I want to connect to this printer by using the wireless on my laptop. The printer is HP Officejet R40.
i have a much easier and better way. first find the ip address of the desktop pc. once u have the ip address of the desktop go to your laptop. do the following commands.
That might work fine if the computer to which the printer is attached has a static IP address. On most home networks, the IP may change because they use dhcp, then the networked printer will no longer work.
Great, I'm glad it is working for you. But, do you see the potential problem in this, especially for someone who may not be as aware of what this is doing? IP addresses can and do change with dhcp, especially as computers are added to or removed from the network and get turned on/off in different order. When your network printer stops working, just remember how you set it up. When I give advice, I try to make sure my advice will not cause problems in the future. All I am asking is that you do the same.
I just recently puschased and insperion laptop with windows 7 installed. I have an HP PSC 950 connected to my laptop and can see the network from my laptop. When I try to install the printer if says that it cannot find the driver for it. I previously had a laptop using XP and had no problem doing this. Any suggestions on how to connect through the network to a printer on another computer would be great.
Load the software that came with the printer on every computer you want to use that printer with and make it the default printer. Also make sure the share printer is checked in the main computers network and sharing in the control panel with no password needed.

Appreciate the response, but here's my problem:

Your thoughts, please.
Thanks,
