IP addresses.

I am connecting two computers, but we both get the error message that the IP address is wrong.

Can one of you guys, please help me.  Where do I find the IP address?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I need help.

It gets very difficult to keep things together if all of the information is not in the same thread.  Since presumably you are using Internet Connection sharing to share a dial-up connection, you need to enable internet connection sharing on the dial-up connection first.  Internet Connection sharing will assign IP addresses to both the network adapter on the computer that will dial up and on the network adapter on the other computer.  Thus, both computers should be set to obtain an IP address automatically.  To do this, go to Start > Control > Panel > Networking & Internet Connections > Network Connections, then double click on the network connection and select "Properties".  Scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click on the "Properties" button.  On the general tab is where you either set an IP address or choose to have it assigned automatically.

Volcano, I am unable to double click on network connections.  Is there another way I can access the internet  protocol?

When I click  on the network connections, all I get are the connection icons, and am unable to get to properties.

    Does that make sense?

Thank you soooo much for your help.  I will try this, but sounds like exactly what I need.  I will keep you informed.  Thank you again.

Right click on the network icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu, or double-click on the network icon.

Steve, the only icons, network or otherwise, are Dial-up (AOL),Direct, and LAN. I tried doing what you suggested on each one and I still didn't get Internet Protocol window.  I know I have seen it but I don't remember where or how.

Any more suggestions?  I am sorry to be such a pest.

See www.homenethelp.com  Now you mention that you have AOL as your dialup service.  I don't think Internet Connection sharing will work with AOL.

Steve, it was AOL that suggested it.   I checked with the www.homenet.help.  I couldn't find what I needed.  I am just about to give up.  If I could just remember where it was I saw that protocol window.  Any other ideas?

Ok, here's the problem with posting messages in more that one thread.  I'm sure you have said before which version of Windows you are running, but not in this thread.  I seem to recall it was Windows XP.  Look at the pictures on the following page:

    http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-xp.asp

You set the IP addresses in the Internet Protocol Properties box.
