You should have installed the XP drivers on Windows XP for the printer, even though the printer is physically sonnected to the Win98SE PC.  XP drivers for the printer can be downloaded here.

Thanks.  I downloaded the drivers and installed them.  But it still doesn't work.

I checked the properties of the printer and chose "Ports".  There it said that the printer was was connected to LPT!.  So I moved down the list until I reached one which said H....  With the cursor on this it expanded to" HSG (the name of the computer connected to the printer)\EpsonC84".  So I checked that box and clicked on "Apply" and got the following message:

"Printer Settings could not be saved.  Operation could not be comleted".  But no clue as to why not.  Maybe you can help.

Thanks.  That was easy.  However, a clue.

When I pressed OK to print, my firewall asked permission for a program (I think it was SAgent4,or something like that) to access the internet (or at least the router) and then to accept input,  all of which I approved.  So there was probably a firewall problem.

I can't say why it failed to save.  You were on the right track.

I suggest you delete the printer and start over.  Once deleted, go back to Add Printer.  Select network printer and then browse the network to the printer.  Make sure the computer with the printer and the printer itself are both powerd up.  Complete the Add Printer wizard.

Open msconfig and uncheck it so it does not start in the future.  That way you can always restore it if need be.

SAgent4 is an Epson process which monitors the printer's status, ink levels, etc.  (See this site).  You got the warning from your firewall because it was not an exception.  Now it is.  However, if SAgent4 is already running on the Win98 computer, you would really not have to run it on the WinXP computer.  You could remove it from the running processes.  Your firewall should be configured to allow traffic over the local network.  You haven't said which firewall you use, but most have a "Trsuted Zone" where you enter the IP address range of the local network, which is dependent on what addresses your router is assigning.

Thanks again.  I'm using ZoneLabs (free) and I do have my IP Addresses listed in the Trusted Zone to permit messages to go back and forth.  And yes, I do have SAgent4 on the Win 98Se  computer, so I'll just delete the file on the XP and delete all references to it in the Registry.  I hope that there aren't any interdependencies.
