PCI cards killing the server?
We have a PowerEdge 2650 here, and I tried to install 2 PCI cards: a modem and a USB 2 controller.
After inserting the cards, the server would not start (it powered on but there was no image on the screen). It turns out that it doesn't like the USB controller.
I only left the modem, and it booted up; however, the network adapters didn't work anymore (Windows says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)")
Luckily I found a USB Ethernet adapter lying around, and after struggling a lot to find drivers, burn them on a cd and install them on the server, I got it back online (connected on USB 1, so quite slow).
It's very troublesome for me to open the case and tinker with the server again and again (not to mention downtime); I won't go into details.
Anyway, I wonder why it hates PCI cards, and why it has PCI slots if it can't stand PCI cards. Is there anything I can do about it?
Also, is it possible to add USB 2 connectivity without a PCI card?
