What does embedded mean?

Hi all,

I have a quick question.

I need to start using VMware ESXi (just a single ESXi host, no need for VC or anything like that) and I want to do a minumum of setup myself.

If I purchase a PowerEdge 2950III with the embedded VMware ESXi option, does this mean Dell supply a USB drive (or similar internal storage medium) with ESXi pre-installed on it?

Or will I have to buy my own USB key, download ESXi from VMware (or wherever) and basically install ESXi on the 2950III myself?

I know that the 2950III supports it - I just need to know what to expect if I order it :emotion-42:

Thanks!

Woody

The server should come with ESXi if you select that during configuration.

I've seen on Dell Poweredge servers that you had to enable the internal USB port and reboot and then you could see the USB device as a bootable device and specify to put it in the boot order. I'm not sure if this is still the case though.

    Yes.

I think if you order ESXi as the 'primary OS' with no order OS, the USB key comes pre enabled. All you have to do is boot the system and you are good to go with ESXi.

If you order ESXi as trial with another OS as the primary OS, then ESXi USB key has to be manuually enabled.
