Precision 7550; i7 10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz; Win 10 Pro
Prior to plugging in a WD19TBS, task manager would show my CPU speed varying from 0.8 up to 4.3GHz (or so). Nice and fast.
BIOS (1.7.0) shows turbo boost on
Plugged in the WD19TBS dock, and the cpu seems stuck at 0.81GHz, no matter what we plug into/out-of the dock, what programs are running, etc.
Unplug dock and restart--no change.
Unplug dock and cycle power: CPU back to 4.3GHz.
Plug dock back in--CPU steadily downgrades to 0.8GHz in about 5-10 seconds
Dell support diddled with the system:
Installed bios 1.8.0--no change
Disabled some Windows services (non-MS)
Went in to Dell Power Manager and chose "Ultra Performance"
Set regedit key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm from 3 to 4
CPU now runs at 2.7GHz at all times
I then made the following changes:
reset the intelppm/start key back to 3
Unplugged dock
Changed Dell Power Management to "Balanced"
Cycle power: CPU now stuck at 0.81GHz.
Changed Dell Power Management back to "Ultra"
Cycle power: CPU now "stuck" at 2.7GHz. It's a noticeable slowdown.
How do I get my system back to where it was before all this started? I don't even care to get the dock working with it right now...I need my speed back.
I tried downloading & running the 1.7 BIOS update, but it doesn't seem to have taken. It shows that I still have v 1.8. Can you share the correct link so that I'm sure I'm downloading from the right place? Is there anything else I should do to perform this downgrade?
There's an even better solution, I think. 'silverkorn' has posted a link to v1.8.1; several have tried it (including me), and it works. It's in this thread. I'll mention you in reply to his post so you can get the link.
Here's the link that silverkorn posted. I've tried it, and it works.
"Final" update: this all started when I tried installing a Thunderbolt Dock (WD19TBS), which needed a BIOS upgrade to 1.8.0, which slowed down the system, etc., etc. (Dell suggested a motherboard replacement, which I declined.) Now, after the updated BIOS v1.8.1, I installed the dock, and everything is working fine (fingers crossed, knock on wood). No m'board replacement required.

Out of curiosity, which dock station are you using? is it one of the WD19 performance docks?
