Why should we add a "local printer" when it's actually a network printer for the laptop? The printer is attached to the desktop and NOT my laptop. The printing problem is ONLY from the laptop.

I have a wireless network consisting of my laptop and a desktop pc. The printer is attached to the desktop pc.

Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch(patch MUST be used on Vista machines) to completely remove the printer from your computer.

 

Restart your computer.

 

Download theProper drivers

 

XP Drivers

 

Vista 32-bit Drivers.

 

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

 

Remember to install the latest firmware for the 962 printer.

 

Scanning

 

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

 

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

 

The basics are:

1) Establish a working wireless network (follow your manufacturers instructions)
2) Attach the printer to its host computer
3) Be able to print from the host
4) Enable File and Print sharing on the host
5) Set the printers properties to be shared
6) Add a network printer on the client via the Add Printer Wizard

 

Printer Sharing on XP/Vista Network

Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name.

Type in the \\computername\printername

It's something strange with Vista. This was a fix for many.

By saying networked, are you talking about a wireless network, wireless router and the 3300 or some other type of print server or are you talking about some type of wired network like businesses use?

I had already done all these steps even before I posted this issue. Printing from the host is fine. It's only while printing to the network printer from the laptop that I get the error. How to fix that?

But I'm NOT running Vista. It's only Windows XP Media Center edition.

Just do the basics.

The host is set for printer sharing.

 

The laptop, if Vista needs the patch run to remove the printer drivers, then restarted.

 

The try installing the drivers that were downloaded, choose network and follow the instructions.
