MS Office installer issue

For the last couple of weeks, whenever I boot my PC, or start up any MS Office product (Outlook, Word, etc) a Windows Installer box pops up stating the message

"The feature you are trying to use is on a Cd-Rom or removable disk that is not available".

There is the usual option to browse for the required file (which I think is poret.msi).

MS Office is fully loaded on the hard drive so I don't know why it is asking for the disks (which I don't have as it came pre-loaded from Dell).

If I click 'Cancel', I receive the following message - "Error 1706 setup cannot find the required files".

If I then click "OK" the programme loads as normal??

So whilst this doesn't stop me working it is getting pretty tiresome. Have searched for the poret file and it is not on my PC and have also looked up the 1706 error code, which just refers to the system not being able to access the required file on the CD-ROM.

I have also followed the "repair" feature in add/remove programmes in the control panel.

I am guessing for some reason the software is trying is going into the windows installer - but not sure what it is looking for or why?

Is it anything to do with an incorrect system registry?

Any help/thoughts/comments appreciated.

Thanks......

First you should have received the MS Office installation CD's along with the Product Key.  And, sadly, you only had 30 days to requrest the missing software.  Dell, in almost all cases, will not replace the missing applications software after the 30 day period and that is what you need to fix the problem.  If you know someone that has the identical version of Office you MAY be able to use their CD to fix the problem.

One note, if you ever have to reinstall Office you are out of luck and will have to purchase a new copy.  Same way with the Product Key, if you had the CD's but not the key as Dell does not keep records on that.

Thanks - that's what I feared. I got the PC a couple of years ago and assumed you didn't get the disks. At least I know now.....and will buy from somewhere else!

    Cheers....
