My NEC DVD player has stopped reading CD roms. I have tried everything I can possibly think of to get it working properly.

1) It reads DVDs

2) It will read CDs on ocassion but rarely.

3) I have cleaned the drive thoroughly. After a cleaning disk didn't work, I took the drive apart and cleaned it manually. It still reads DVDs and will on ocassion read a CD.

4) I have the latest version of DirectX.

5) I have Power DVD 5 installed.

6) I have updated the firmware with the latest version from Dell's website.

7) The device is listed as working properly in the hardware manager.

I have tried everything I can possibly think of to trouble shoot this issue. I may have left out a few things I've tried. I searched the forum for others with this issue. I found some posts with a similiar problem but no answer on how to fix it. Has anyone had this issue and if so found a way to fix it?
