Whining noise

I`m not quite sure where the whining is coming from , I have put my ear up to the back of the computer and it sounds like it could be around a fan but again i`m not sure. I have had this computer since Feb. 2004 and I have just recently noticed this whine. It doesn`t happen at any certain time and when it does happen it is very quiet and only lasts for maybe 2 seconds. Nothing slows down on my computer while it happens either. I haven`t had any other problems.

When does this problem occur ? Usally the newer systems have a sensor on the board to tell the fan to work harder to keep the system cool, but if its persistant (the noise) you should call technical support about it.

It doesn`t occur as soon as I turn my computer on and keep going. It happens maybe within a half an hour or so after I have turned my computer on no matter what I am doing on the computer. It aslo doesn`t do it nonstop. It does it sometimes every 5 minutes or so sometimes longer. It only lasts for 1-2 seconds and is not loud at all.  I hope I have given enough information. I do know that the inside is dusty. I am in the middle of packing things up in my house trying to move to another county in Ohio within 1-2 months so I wasn`t wanting  to open my computer up to clean it. Obviously if I have to I will.  Thank you for the reply!

There are a lot of possible cause of noise in your computer.

it may be the fan inside (processor fan, video card fan or the power supply fan)

it may also be the drives in your computer (hard drive, cd rom and floppy drive)

and believe it or not sometimes its also a virus.

you will need to eliminate possible causes by removing some parts to check. just call Dell tech support and they will surely help you out with your problem.
