Direct Matrix vs Virtual Matrix

Hi Folks ,

The old DMX was Direct Matrix Architecture and new V-Max is  Virtual Matrix Architecture.

I know both concept theortically but i am not able to co-relate them (or not able to figure out what is the Exact difference in architecture ) ??

What EMC has achieved by breaking down  whole architecutre into  engines ??

Is there something related to Cache ?? But Initally Cache was global one , can be accessed by any director directly . In V-Max though cache resided on  Engine it can be accessed by any Dir of any engine. So what has changed  ??

Is this related to OnDemand resource requirment like I can add the engines as per requirment but in old architecture also i can add DA/FA/Cache directors as per requirment So what has changed  ??

Again MIBE is component of Virtual Matrix but again it was there in old architecture also . So what has changed ??

Is this just related to Virtual Provisioning only ?? Then there was not need to have Engine architecture .

EMC would have achived that without engine architecutre also.

- Thanks

BTW, there was no MIBI in DMX..

DMX used a backplane which contained the paths for the Matrix.  Each director and memory board had fixed connections on the backplane for each slot.

VMAX uses a the virtual matrix (fabric) to connect directors together.

You are correct that the memory was a separate board in DMX and is now installed on the same board as the CPUs, but the global memory is still global to all directors.

What was achived was a new archetecture that is not limited by a fixed backplane, which is more modular in expansion capabilities, etc.

VMAX also has more usable capacity, more available host ports, and is more energy efficient.  The attached presentation, available on Powerlink, gives some more detailed info on these points.

The Engine architecture also makes the system more modular.  Each Engine has it's own power and cooling components, and you can add Engines a your requirements grow.  The modular design also enables some component replacements to be even more isolated than that of previous versions of Symmetrix.

Thanks All  . So its backplan vs virtual . I was just googling and found a good link. It explain architecture evolution from DMX to VMAX .
