continuing desktop problems/possible virus

This was originally posted in the Windows XP Forum and I was reffered here

Over the past week or so, sometimes when I have a window open on my desk top and then proceed to move it around or drag it, I can see where the window has been dragged in the back ground (like a trail of where the window started and where it moved to). Then i cannot access my desktop and the icons on it after this happens. I have tired running Norton, but this doesnt solve the problem, and I am getting really frustrated because the only way it seems to go away is if i restart me computer, but then like clockwork it will happen again. Someone please help!

someone posted in the other forum that you could try reinstalling your video card drivers.. i don't understand why running adaware (to remove adware) would make things so that you could not connect to the internet.. (unless maybe you are using an isp that has a banner that generates adds) i thought that if you had a problem with adware, you could get help with it in this forum.. hopefully, reinstalling the video drivers will fix the problem that you are having..

there are instructions for reinstalling video card drivers (and everything else) in dell support/solutions/reinstall guide.. (you have to "select" your model dell to get the appropriate information) if you have never reformatted the harddrive, and reinstalled win xp and everything else, i think it is a good idea to do that.. if you do reformat the harddrive, you need to have a firewall running before reconnecting to the internet... you can use the win xp "icf" firewall, or you can save a firewall to disks and install it before reconnecting to the internet.. usually, you can simply uninstall the video card drivers from add/remove, and install new ones.. there is a video forum where you can find more information..

perhaps I can take it into a place that fixes computers and they can do it. I really dont trust myself messing around with a computer, and I guess I would pay extra money to just have it done.

you do not need to have someone else to reinstall win xp etc for you.. look at the instructions in dell support/solutions/reinstall guide.. reformatting the harddrive and reinstalling win xp is simple (but time-consuming).. you can take your time to get around to actually doing it, reading the instructions.. you can email me at redwolfe_98 at yahoo.com ..

well...maybe it is easy, but if it is time consuming, then that is something I lack because I dont have a ton of time. When you reinstal windows xp do you lose everything you have saved?

yes, everything on the harddrive will be erased, therefore you should save anything that you want to save to disks, either floppies or cds, or you could use online storage, or some other type of storage.. you could save things like favorite places, documents, or pictures to floppy disks, but if you have a lot of songs that you want to save, you will have to burn them to cd's using a cdrw since that would require a lot of storage capacity.. you don't need to save programs.. everything that originally came on your dell is backed up on the disks that came with your dell, and you can re-download any programs that you downloaded from the internet.. you need to know how to turn on the win xp internet connection firewall before reconnecting to the internet after reformatting and reinstalling win xp.. the win xp "icf" firewall is not compatible with aol, so if you use aol, i would download another firewall and split it onto floppy disks so that it can be installed before reconnecting to the internet..

You were referred here for a reason. *;-) I am an A+ technician and a malware responder. From what you describe I doubt it is your video card or driver. It is probably malware slowing down Windows until it crashes.

The "normal" drag effect is a rather cool Windows Display properties effect (See Display Properties/Appearance/Effects/ checked box for show windows contents while dragging) that normally does not linger quite so long...but with a slowed machine it could occur.

So...you can take it to your local yokel or CompUSA and have them format the PC for you and lose all your data (for $100). Or try to fix it with me for free.

We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.

Download the zipped file from here: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt

Or....If you prefer an .exe version (saves a lot of time for novices) download the file from here:

    http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Please unzip Hijackthis.zip or move the hijackthis.exe file into a new folder you create in the root (first) level of the C: drive. Name this folder HJT for best and safest results. Don't place it on the Wallpaper, in a temp folder, or in the root level of the C: drive or the My Documents folder. It will create many backup files and they need to be stored in a unique Hijackthis folder.

Hijackthis FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) at:

    http://russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

After downloading, and unzipping the hijackthis file into a safe folder you create (preferably a folder named HJT in the first level of the C: drive)...run Hijackthis, click on the 'scan' button and then 'save log' button.

Copy and paste the contents of the text file you save into a reply to this message. A lot of posters make mistakes here in copying and pasting so reread the left info sidebar called Copy and Paste at http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt

Special Notice! Hijackthis is a powerful tool that edits the brains of Windows (the Registry). DO NOT FIX anything in the Hijackthis log screen without assistance from the experts! Most of the line items in the scanned log are normal for Windows operation. Hijackthis should identify the vast majority of your problems and enable us to help you clean them off your system.
