What is it ???????

Not sure wheather or not its a virus. But aroud 2 weeks ago all of my icons were blanked out and I couldn't start any programs. I managed to get them back using a tool from a web site that recovered all file extensions. This happened twice.
The PC is working again but it is still not 100% ok i.e. when I boot it up I get a strange box with unreadable symbols in it and when I hit ok, XP starts ok.

I have tried all of my virus and spyware checkers and have found nothing
Hope this makes sense and any help or advice would be much appreciated.

In your original post you said it started two weeks ago.

If you are unsure, it's possible then that your issue is related to the Registry hacking.

Let's have a look at your installed software. We can knock out a few birds with one stone...the HijackThis application is useful for several functions. Creating an uninstall list (which is a list of your installed software) is just one of them:

Click the Download button then select Installer.
Double click on the HJTInstall.exe then click "Install". It will be installed by default here:
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
...and A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent hijackthis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder.

The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

While the HijackThis application is still open click on "Open the MiscTools section". Next, click Open Uninstall Manager then click the Open Add/Remove Software list.

Make sure Show updates (at the top) is checked then close the Add or Remove Programs window. Return to Hijackthis and click the Save list button. Save the list to your Desktop and post that list back here in this thread. Thanks!

The program Azureus is file sharing software. With file sharing software installed, you could experience a multitude of problems if you are not careful.

Many security experts advise against the use of "file sharing" software because of the risks involved and often will recommend a reformat and reinstall of windows when a user experiences a variety of odd/unexplained System Behavior.

Click here for information regarding the risks of using File Sharing software.

With Acronis True Image installed, what do you need this for?:
Magic ISO Maker v5.3 (build 0229)

Acronis True Image is better than your system restore capabilities with Windows XP. You can use the image that you created when you installed this software to restore your computer back to the condition it was in when you recorded the image...If however, this software was downloaded using the Azureus "File Sharing" application, then your image is likely corrupted and useless.

In any event, you should uninstall these:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    PC Registry Cleaner
    Registry Mechanic 6.0
    Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only)

...but before uninstalling the Registry cleaners, use their backup copies (that they should have made for you) to restore the Registry entries that you removed.

    Post back your results.

    Hi
Thanks again. I have just one question. Do I really need to uninstall the Java apps as they seem to be used by my Azereus and anther on line chat site and am worried I will not be able to use them after.

    Dave

P.S. I will not be able to do this until tomorrow as I'm out tonight

Sorry, I should have been more specific...I judged from the software that you had installed that you already knew how and where to download Java.

These applications are old and cause yet another security issue as a result:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Two of those are known to have been exploited with emphasis on the version 1.4.2_03 being particularly troublesome. Once uninstalled, navigate to and delete:
    • C:\Program Files\ Java =this folder if found
Then, download and install the latest version Here.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."and click the "Download" button to the right.
