Need help with a clean install

Hi, I am new to the boards and really need help.  I have been talking back and forth to techs on the phone and I keep getting the same answers that end up with the same results.  I am having problems with my new Dell.  I say new, but it is about a year old.  I recently decided to go back to college and take some online classes.  I started experiencing problems with my pc being sluggish and AOL locking up.  Not only did AOL lock up but my word documents would as well.  I called a tech and they walked me through some things that made it worse.  I now get AOL 9.0 to work on my pc and I have spent several hours on the phone with AOL.  I need help figuring out how to do a clean install, start over so to speak.  I made backups of all my files and I need someone to assist me in un-installing all the programs and then reinstalling them.  What should I do first? This is the last resort and considering that I NEED to be online and have my documents running smoothly, it is necessary to just start over.  Any help would be appreciated.  I have all the disk that I need for the clean install.  I was just wondering if I need to un-install first.

Thanks,

Jess

    JELLYBEAN3557,

There is no need to uninstall anything. Formatting (and partitioning if you choose) are done as a part of the installation of XP. See the procedures here.

Denny is right, I heard the same thing, however I went ahead on my own and did a complete re-install, being my first re-install I was very nervous.  Actually it was very easy.  I burned any word doc ,email, favorites and stuff on a disc.  I also searched for and new drivers that I might need.  Seeing I have the dell utility and OS disk that really wasn't required.  Before you reinstall make sure that your computer can boot from the CD.  There is instruction on how to do that.  Anyways to make a long story short, put the disk that came with your system into the CD.  Then restart your system.  After that, simply follow the instructions.  It asked something about a partition, I said yes.  I think I said yes to everything.  After windows was installed it starts to search for new hardware, I closed that out, and inserted the dell utility disk, and install accordingly.  It was real simple dude, I'am a windows for dummy type of guy.  After everything was installed, I went and did a Microsoft update, lots of updates.  I don't know if this has helped, give it a shot, if you fail take the system to a tech and pay 40bucks and have them do it.  Here are a few URL that are very helpful if you don't already have them

Thanks I will try the instructions.  My husband is a programmer analyst specialist and he refuses to help me.  He says that is why we have Dell Techs.  He is so burned out by the time he comes home that he refuses to look at our PC.  Sadly for me  I need the PC for school.  I have all the disk that I got with my PC and I will try to do all of this tonight.  Thanks for your help.  I will let you know how it goes.
