Slow system

If this is not the right place for this, someone please direct me...My system has become extremely slow especially when loading after a start.  It seems like I am always waiting for it to do something.  Where do I start?  I have Norton's and Webroot so I think I am covered there, unless something has gotten through those.  Otherwise I don't know.

    System Defrag
    Spyware
    More Memory
    Too many applications running
     
     
    Just a few areas to start looking into.

    I did a defrag last week, I have a spyware program, and not even half of my memory is gone.   The applications thing is  real possibility, how is that done?

    to view running apps
    open task manager
     
    press ctrl + alt + del
    and then select task manager.
     
    Go ter the perfromance tab,
    if the CPU usage graph is jumping all over the place, then somthing not right,
     
    select the processes tab
    and within that look at the cpu and mem usage columns
    Look for anything untoward,
    really and truly, after your computer has started and you have no other applications running, the system idle process should be the only process doing anything
     
    You should be able to identify what process are eating your memory and cpu time.
     
    If you dont find anything,
    try to disable your startup items with msconfig,
     
     
    Hope this is ok.

    could right click on my computer and select properties
    The General Tab should give you some info on the amount of memory and cpu speed

    Define 50%.  Half of a gig is a lot, while half of 256mb is a bare minimum.  Scan for spyware with more than one program.

    Let me know where to look to get the exact numbers for you.  When I did a scan disk and defrag it showed about half the space used up, but I'm not exactly sure what it said.  Thanks for your help.

    can you check your task manager to see which processes are using the most cpu time and memory

    Here goes
     
    CPU usage said 0%.  I had nothing running.
     
    PF usage was 325 MB
     
    Physical memory
    522736 Total
    219500s (it wavered around) varying
     
    47 processes
     
    God I'm glad u know what this means :)

    All of that looks normal.  How many firewalls are running?  I know you said you installed Norton (that in itself is a resource hog), but is the Windows Firewall running also, plus maybe anohter that you don't know about?
