XP SP3 BSOD
I have read most of the posts concerning XP SP3 but I do not see any references to the Blue Screen of Death.
I have five Dell XP Systems (XP Professional SP2) 3 on laptops and two desktop systems.
The laptops upgraded with no problems.
Initially I tried the Dimension 4600 using the Windows Update file, but on the first BOSD purchased the CD ROM to get the full installation kit.
The next installtion was performed from an XP SP3 CD ROM purchased direct from Microsoft, one old laptop went OK but the two desktops failed.
The desktops, both elderley, a Dimension 4600 and Dimension 8250 have exhibited the same problem, a BSOD during the final running processes stage after installing the new files. The STOP Error code on both desktops is the same, but a search on the Microsoft Knowledge base using the code came up empty.
Both systems restore to XP SP2 succesfully - but what a waste of time, 2 hours plus a system to get back to square one!
I have attempted several 'solutions' including disconnecting from the network, disabling NAV2008 and ZoneAlarm Pro, plus disabling anything that could be turned off in the task bar.
I have removed an old printer driver Laserjet 3600 as I suspected that may be the cause - no it was not.
I have checked for BIOS and Chipset upgrades etc.
The most annoying thing is that I have very contented systems running XP SP2 - if only I could get rid of the "New Upgrades waiting" nag from the task bar I could probably live without SP3.
Anyone know how to get rid of the nag icon?
Don
