Dell XPS 8940 Gaming Optimization
Apologies if this has been posted before but I have done a bit of research on various sites and forums and was wondering if any XPS owners have some tips/insights on how to optimize your system for higher FPS and gaming performance.
I have i5-11400 - 3060ti - 16gb RAM
I am fully aware of the CPU cooler issues, I am semi-aware of Dell BIOS limiting your ability to overclock. Is there anything else holding this system back from a performance perspective?
I find depending on the game, that my system struggles to obtain higher frames. I know that games are optimized differently, but for example, I can get about 50-60fps on Halo Infinite, 70fps on PubG, 90fps on Valorant. On paper this seems reasonable, but this is also with settings on Low or near the bottom for all games. The XPS seems to underperform relative to other systems with the same hardware. My CPU also seems to throttle to 100% usage at times.
My questions are mainly:
- What can I do from a software/setting perspective to maximize performance? (XTU? Throttlestop? MSI afterburner?)
- Everything I have read says upgrading the CPU cooler is worth it, but in terms of performance improvements what can I generally expect? (is this what's mainly holding back my pc?)
- Anything else that's recommended? (adding another 16gb of RAM?)
Any insights are appreciated. This is also my first experience with a mid-tier PC, so while I have some basic knowledge with computers and how they operate, I am by no means an expert.

Re:I have i5-11400 - 3060ti - 16gb RAM
adding more system ram would not help gaming. 16gb ram is good already.
your config on gpucheck:
you should be able to get to 68 fps at 4k on ultra settings.
cpu temp is a potentially big factor holding you back because if the cpu can not turbo boost freely and if it is often thermal throttled back down to 2.6 base freq, your gaming jet is grounded. if you have the Dell pancake cooler the first thing I would do is upgrade to the premium $50 cooler or an AIO liquid cooler. this is not a big investment but seems critical.
also run a gpu benchmark test (free) and compare to others to see where your gpu performance stand.
