Go to SolutionXPS 15 overheating
I've had issues with this laptop overheating since I bought it brand new a year ago. Many components have been replaced by the factory saying the parts were defective or whatever. I came home to my laptop running while it was inside the sleeve inside my laptop bag the other night and it almost burned my hand. Today it didn't even seem like it was running yet still was overheating inside my bag while closed.

To receive assistance from Dell chat Technical support, they need to first verify the warranty status and ownership. Then you must troubleshoot with them. Click the "Get Help Now" icon on the right to start a live chat session. Provide to them the private Service Tag and all of your troubleshooting.(edited)

- The overheating while in the bag happened to me too!! It was scary - I saved 6 months to get this laptop, I can't afford insurance and it is an important tool for my business. I've also got cracking sound card issues, and it overheats/crashes a lot. Dell, what's up? I bought this laptop to edit and work with video, as was recommended by so many, but sound issues and overheating (I can't edit without using a ton of RAM/Processing power; lots of heat) are NOT things I would recommend. I am tempted to Google every question asked about "Which laptop do I need for editing?" and warn them off XPS 15.
Same has happened to me too. This is a brand new machine and it never seems to be fully shut off. Fan was spinning crazy fast and I could barely touch the laptop. Hoping it hasn't been damaged in any way contacted Dell, hoping they will get back with a solution soon.
Mine won't shut down when told to either, then runs the max frequency over 100% when doing nothing, over heating the system. Try creating a power plan that limits the CPU max frequency and the Java Script timer frequency to get around what appears the Dell's BIOS. Holding the power button will generally work if choosing 'shut down' shuts the system down but then it keeps rebooting.

That's "Modern Standby" for you. Only solution is to apply a reghack to force S3 sleep, but that causes other issues since windows was installed with S0. Modern Standby is the worst.
