Audio lagging and crackling when using jack

Hello! I have a Dell Inspiron 7380 with Windows 10 installed. Today my laptop started developing a problem that I haven't seen before. When using the 3.5mm jack for audio (headphones or external speakers) the audio crackles and lags. When this happens, the laptop is laggy too and not very responsive. This doesn't occur when using the built-in audio for the laptop. I tried re-installing the audio drivers but that didn't make a difference. I'm guessing it's a hardware issue but I wanted to see if anyone here had had a similar problem.

Hey, have you tried Microsoft High Definition Audio Device ? If not, go:

    • device driver > Sound, Video and Game ctrl'er > Realtek Audio
    • right click on that, select "update driver" or equavilent
    • select "browse my laptop"
    • select "let me find it"
    • untick the checkbox
    • from the list of providers, select Microsoft, then select High Definition Audio Device 2020 and install that
