Computer Failure?
My computer stopped working after it froze up and I had to shut it down improperly. All the components inside; as to say the hardrive, the floppy drive and CD-ROM drive all seem to be running but it just won't get passed the POST sequence to boot to Windows incliuding no beeps and no flashing green light from floppy like it used to. I've tried all I can diconnecting everything to taking out the motherboard and checking it for damage but I can't find anything wrong with this unless some static did damage when I installed some memory that turned out to be the wrong kind so I put back the original 48MB and it still don't work. I will say that I was working on this old computer Dell Dimension P-75 with my Dimension 4100 keyboard and mouse and monitor that kept getting adaptor errors when It used to boot to Windows and when I tried to fix that with the Windows CD it froze up then now it stopped working.

- NO, can't boot to anything, have no keyboard, mouse or monitor functions either. I tried clearing the NVRAM with the jumpers inside stripped it down completely disconnecting everything and removing all cards and even the motherboard and then replacing everything and still have the same problem. I honestly believe thee motherboard and CPU are damaged.
- Not necessarily - if the power supply is putting out voltages & current levels outside specification, it won't send the required Power_Good signal to the motherboard, so POST will cease. I think the little green light may still come on in these circumstances - perhaps somebody with more knowledge can comment.
- What actually happened as I was trying to install a video driver from off the Windows98SE CD and when found the display drivers i tried to install one that matched the adapter when it froze up on me.The CTRL+ALT+DEL would not let me close and the rest button wouldn't either,so I had to shut down with power button that has now left me in this situation. Everything powers up but won't get through the POST sequence to boot up. Can't do anything, nothing works,no monitor, keyboard,or mouse, even though all power is on to all drives.
Try Ebay. Also, look at the diagnostic led lights ( 4 of them ) on the back of your tower. They should all be green. Any yellow light means a particular problem, depending on which light(s) are yellow.

janko,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Can you boot the system to the diagnostics files that came with your system? If you do not have the files or can not find them you can download the latest version of this from the Dell download site. You can then attempt to boot the system to this file and test the system for hardware failures.
