help locked up

hi I have a dimension 8400 running windows xp. it is not quite 2 years old.  Anyways when I was online playing pogo, the keyboard, mouse and everything locked up.  It would even let me do a ctrl alt delete.  So I just it off at the power source waited awhile and turned the power source on.  The harddrive light came on but it is yellow, also the monitor light is yellow.  I get nothing but a black screen.  Tried holding down the on off button to turn it off which it did and waited awhile and turned it back on but still a black screen with yellow lights.  I do not know where to start on what could be the problem.  Help.

It may be that your hard drive has failed...

After power up, what do the four diagnostic lights show on the back of your tower?

Try plugging your computer power cable straight into the wall outlet?(bypass surge protector)

If it does the same thing, you probably have a bad power supply?

well the lights are not on for the diagnostic code, so I went and bought a new surge protector thinking  that maybe it might be a power supply issue.  Anyways, there are no lights lit up for the diagnostic code.  so guess it is not a power supply issue.

the power light just stays a solid amber.  The monitor light stays a solid amber.  I bought a new surge protector today cause I thought maybe the one I had was faulty as I have had it a long time.  The lights on the diagnositc dont light at all.

I have never had any problems and it is just wierd that this happened.

What is the power light doing?(illuminates actual power switch?)

Today? You purchased and installed a power strip?

well i tried plugging it straight into the wall and even tried another outlet.  still the same.  the on/off switch stays yello and the monitor light stays yelllow.  Just a black screen.  Still no diagnostic lights.  I am at a loss.  Also, I forgot to mention that my cd drive will not open now either.

Yep, sounds like you need a new power supply.(PSU) Is your Dell warranty still good?
