Blue Screen
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 that I bought in 2007. In the past week I have been getting the "blue screen of death" and cannot seem to get past it. When I start my laptop up it goes to the Windows Error Recovery page where I do the Launch Start Up repair, this then takes to me to the blue screen with the error message 0x00000050. I shut down and retart, this time using the safe mode, same outcome. I have not insalled any new hardware, so I am not sure what the problem could be. I did do a full scan which came up with the following problems:
79 error- Unit 1: Drive self test failed Status byte= 79
Error code 0F00:075D Msg 1DE device failed: The self test failed tge read portion of the test
Error code 0F00:0244 Msg. Block 127652897: Uncorrectable Data error or media is write protected
Error code 0F00:1A44 Msg. Block 127652896: Uncorrectable Data error or media is write protected
Error code 0F00:1A44 Msg. Block 127652897 :Uncorrectable Data error or media is write protected
Does anyone know if this is a fixable problem? and if so how much would it cost.... my warrenty has expired.

Thanks Mary for your quick reply:emotion-1: Will getting a new hard drive erase all of the files and stuff already on my laptop? and by getting a new hard drive is there any guarantee that there won't be similar problems like this in a few weeks, because I am debating if it would be better just to buy a new laptop all together.

The new hard drive will be blank - yes, you will lose everything on the existing drive. You may be able to recover some or all of your data; to attempt this, mount the faulty drive in a 2.5" USB 2.0 case and attach it to a working system by USB. See what you can recover.
It's highly unlikely a hard drive will fail again in just a few weeks - but no one can guarantee against all future problems. For that matter, a brand-new system is no guarantee - it can fail as well.

Dell Part# : 341-6261Some Dell™ N-Series systems ship with both ATA and AHCI support. Both are methods for communicating with the hard drive. AHCI has benefits above standard ATA mode that increase performance. Microsoft® Windows® XP does not support AHCI mode by default, which causes the STOP 0x0000007B error message if AHCI mode is enabled before the AHCI driver is installed. Also resetting the factory defaults in the System Setup will return the value to AHCI.
AHCI mode is enabled by default from the factory and AHCI mode is the default setting in System Setup on the following N-Series systems:
- Dimension™ E520
- OptiPlex™ 755
- OptiPlex 330
- Latitude™ D630
- Inspiron™ 1420
- Inspiron 1520
- Inspiron 1720
- Vostro™ 1400
- Vostro 1500
- Dell Precision™ Workstation M1330
When using a WinPE disc, creating a new system image with Windows XP, or a performing a clean reinstall of Windows XP the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (IMSM) driver needs to either be included in both the WinPE and new system image or loaded during the setup of Windows XP using the driver from the ResourceDVD or web.
As a work around, enabling ATA mode can also resolve this.
Change the SATA Operation Setting From RAID Autodetect / AHCI to RAID Autodetect / ATA in System Setup

Restart the computer.

Press immediately after the keyboard LEDs flash to enter the BIOS (System Setup).

In the System Setup screen, press or to highlight the Drives section, and then press .

Press the or to highlight the SATA Operation section, and then press .

Press the or to highlight RAID Autodetect / ATA, and then press .

Press to exit the System Setup.

Press or to highlight Save/Exit, and then press . The computer restarts.

Buy a new hard drive. A simple fix and not too expensive. Make sure you have your operating system disks. If you need replacement disks order them here.
