keypad problem with my laptop

for some reason my (8) nor (k) nor (<) will work except when i have it setup to use those as number keys other wise all other keys will work except these, does anyone have any suggestion?  i had a friend try to help but no luck.   thanks for any help!!!

    Hi,
    You dont say what model, but try to run the Diags, and also boot into DOS ( by a floppy disk if possible ) and see what the keys do.
