For those that previously responded, please repost. I wasn't able to read your suggestions before Dell deleted my previous post on this matter.

 

I have an Inspiron 9100 that runs slower than my 7 year old Dell
desktop computer. I can't run dvds or games on it (even though it has
the correct software) because the picture glitches so badly. IE runs
terribly slow, too. I've tried different software and am convinced it's
not a software issue. I've tried everything to fix the problem from
increasing memory (now 640 mb) to shutting programs down (and many many
other things). I finally asked a techie friend to turn it on and see if
my expectations were too high or if my laptop was just really slow.
He looked at it for a few minutes and then took it outside. He played a
dvd fine the entire time it was outside. My IE ran faster than I've ever
seen it run. The reason: it's cold outside. Soooo, my laptop is
overheating when it's inside.
Any solutions? IMO, this is a horrible design flaw from Dell. Am I
destined to have to sit outside every time I want to use my laptop?
(Guess I'm out of luck when Summer/Spring comes). I'm still covered by
warranty but, I no longer want this model because of how hot it gets (I
don't think the design can be fixed and I don't think they're making it
any longer). I've spent countless dollars on cooling fans to put beneath
the laptop and not one, no matter the cost, can cool it down enough for
it to run properly.
What are my options? Any advice?

If I do send it in to Dell Tech support, how are they likely to handle
the problem?

*Also, when I had 256, my computer was still incredibly slow. I added RAM to try to fix the problem (added 512 and left one of Dell's 128).

This is definitely a heat problem since I can sit outside in the cold and everything works perfectly.
