I had to replace my laptop battery for a Studio 1735.  Initially, the battery was not recognized / identified and this is what I did to correct it.  With the laptop off and the battery removed, power on the laptop using the adapter to make sure the adapter is working properly and is not the problem.  With the laptop on, install the new battery and it should be recognized / identified and will allow the new battery to charge.

I have also heard (but not confirmed) to extend the useful life of the battery, you should allow the battery to completely drain and then plug in the adapter to charge.  When the battery is fully charged, unplug the adapter and continuously repeat the process.
