Brightness too high - solution for 1905FP

I can't believe that neither the FAQ, nor any posts I found mentioned this simple solution.  I have a 6 year old Demension XPST550, running Win98SE, to which I connected a new 1905FP monitor, and loaded the driver on the accompanying disk.  I thought maybe it was incompatible, since I could not get brightness and contrast adjusted for photos - very washed out, with anything resembling black impossible to get.  Earlier, I had installed an nVidia Geforce MX 440 (name from my poor memory) video card, so I thought that might be incompatible.  Not so!

For this card, the solution was in the desktop properties - settings - video card tab - popup menu on that tab - "color settings".   With the RGB linked together to move as one, simply turning down the 'color' (which is really brightness) to about 90%, solved the problem.  This brings the picture into a range where a reasonable black level is obtainable with the monitor's controls.  You might have to tweak it with various combinations of contrast/brightness on the video card controls and monitor controls, but this allows you to get an absolutely gorgeous picture.  Hope this helps someone else.

I found changing the moniors brightness in it's menu down to 50 helped, then the gamma in my video card drivers from 1.0 to 0.8 to fix any washed out look.

Also, for those that connect using DVI, the will disable the contrast controls on the monitor.

Right!  I forgot to mention that I don't have DVI on that card.  Doing what you did - changing the gamma - adjusts the brightness and contrast all at once, I believe, so same difference.  I readjusted my card again, later, to 85% brightness, and my monitor to 30% brightness, and 70% contrast.  I may tweak it a bit more after working with some photos, but I surely was happy to find that video card adjustment.

I got exactly the same problem with my 1905FP: screen too bright, almost foggy, colors all got washed out. But after I did something on the color correction of my Video card, the monitor turned out to be awesome and gave out beautiful colors.

I have a 2+ years old nVidia GeForece3 Ti 200 Video card and the 1905FP was connected vie DVI connectors. I downloaded a new driver from nVidia’s website: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp. After I updated the driver, I made some changes in the color correction and the values I input were:

Digital Vibrance: Low;         Brightness: 100%;      Contrast: 105%;           Gamma: 0.77.

     Hope this will help.
