Pools containing multiple adv_file devices

Hi,

I am currently running Networker 7.2 for Windows. I have three adv_file type devices, which I've placed into a single pool. My hope was that when one device became full, the save set continued across into another adv_file device with free space.

Unfortunately this does not happen, and the backup job stalls pending the removal of content via staging. The following external forum article suggests that what I'm trying to do is not possible ( http://www.adsm.org/lists/html/Networker/2007-11/msg00115.html)

Has anyone come up with a way around this problem? We are about to upgrade to Networker 7.4 SP1 - does it handle this any differently?

We previously had the 3 adv_file devices combined together as a single 5TB dynamic disk using Windows, but have been having troubles with a Windows bug taking this volume offline frequently. I thought I'd be clever and set the volumes up as 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB disks, and then combine them together as a single pool. Unfortunately it looks as though that will not work!

Any other ideas gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

    Hi,
You may use several advanced_file type devices in one pool to get backup parallelism but not to have a spare to continue any save set there if one device got full. Whether parallelism makes sense or not depends on the disk location of the adv_file devices.
It's in the nature of an adv_file device that any save set begun there has also to be finished there. Performing a recover space operation there is the only way out, probably with staging some save sets before.
That's a major difference to a 'standard' file type device or a physical tape volume. Here it is possible to continue a save set on a different volume if the first one becomes full.

Changing version of NetWorker server to 7.4SP1 will not change this behavior.
    HTH.

What you wish to have is done by file device. Advanced file device, as said above, will require ssid to finish on same device. With appropriate staging policy you can avoid getting device full.
