From cmd prompt can ping ip address 209.191.93.52 or www.yahoo.com and get response in average 112ms with no loss . From IE7 can call http//209.191.93.52 ok but when I use http//www.yahoo.com ( or any name such as www.google.com) just get in bottom left corner "waiting for www.yahoo.com" which eventually times out. ADSL provider suggests reloading operating system.
Any suggestion of fault or how to reload and which part.
To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
Everything looks good there. Here are some things to try:
Go to Start > Run and type ipconfig /flushdns
Try downloading and running winsockfix for Windows XP from the Here
Open the hosts file (it should be at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc it is the file named hosts with no extension and can be opened with Notepad. Look at the contents of the file and see if any of sites you cannot get to are listed. If they are, close the file and rename it to hosts.old
Let me know if any of these steps solve the problem.
Tried all none work. However my virus guard(AVG) updated OK over the link as did Adobe reader, 12mb in 3mins, presumable using FTP. But IE7 and Mozilla Firefox both time out after waiting for site. HTTP ?
Thanks Steve, problem solved, with your help I was able to prove that it was not my computer to my ADSL provider, they re-checked their line( which they insisted was OK ) and found that the telephone central exchange line card was configured wrong and affected HTTP traffic. Now re-configured and working OK.
