Modem Will Not Connect

Hi,

For the past six weeks my wife's modem on her Inspiron 1100 simply will not connect to the internet.  It dials out with no problem, goes through all the "pings" and "bings" and then when you'd normally expect to hear 10 or 15 seconds of uninturrepted static and then get connected, we hear inturrupted static and no connection.  In other words, insetad of going "Shhhhshhhhshhhhshhhhsh" for 10 or 15 seconds, it goes "Shhsh -- shh -- shshsh-- shhhs--- --- shhshh --- etc".  I've noticed that during this, the hour glass icon pulses to the beat of the inturrupted static. I've talked with tech supprt six times.  I've been sent two new modems (the first was the wrong one with the wrong software), I've sent the laptop in to repair, I reinstalled drivers, I've run virus cleaners, I've unistalled firewalls and anti-virus software, I've had the phone lines tsted for a proper SNR (they passed), on and on and on... Nothing. Everything was working fine until one day, it simply didn't. My Inspiron 1100 however dials out and connects perfectly. The only thing I haven't done is reinstalled WinXP cuz I don't have the means to back up and am afraid that the new XP will wipe out all the old files.  When I run the "Repair" program from WinXP CD it asks for an authorization code.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd love to hear them as I'm pretty desperate.  Please post me at spraguetheobald@direcway.com as I may not find my way back to this page.

Many thanks in advance,

Sprague Theobald
