I am a novice in need of a new printer. I have a Dell Dimension 2100 and purchased a Lexmark X73 two years ago. I have been very unhappy with the printer and the quality of the copies. Rather than invest in any repairs I am considering either a Lexmark X5150 or Dell A960. I am open to any suggestions. Please educate me. What would be the best printer for a home office under $200?
I have a just purchased a Dell A940, I wish I had purchased the Lexmark 5150, same printer, but a lot of advantages to the Lexmark, especially when you need cartridges, to hook it to a win98 machine, Dell won't, Lexmark will, and especially the support behind the Lexmark is far superior.
Dell printers are made by Lexmark. However, Dell seems to sell them for less. Just be careful the only difference I can see, is that Dell printers will only work on Win XP or Win 2000. (If you have Win98 goto Lexmark.)
I bought the Dell A960 because I needed a new fax and scanner together in one unit, to save space. Its printing, scanning, copying seems good, so far. However, this is a secondary printer for me, I use a HP 970 for my main printing and am very happy with it.
If you want an all in one I would recommend the Dell A960. You also mention the Lexmark 5150, this is the same as the Dell A940. The difference between the A960 and the A940 is an auto document feeder.
You may want to check CNET for ratings on all printers (www.cnet.com).
I received my A960 about a week ago. For my purposes it seems great. I am using it mainly for faxing and scanning.
I have scanned several pictures and am pleased with the results. Very fast compared to the scanner I replaced. As a fax I have it hooked up so that it can recognize a fax vs. incoming voice call. It will allow all calls to the answering machine; however if it detects the fax trying to handshake, it will disconnect the ansering machine and receive the fax. (I have a standard AT&T digital answering machine.)
I haven't done any photo printing yet; but the regular print seems fine. I would have to say it is a little bit noiser than my other printer (but I don't really care, it just surprised me a bit).
I am not on a wireless network so I don't if there are any special directions for that; I have it hooked up to the USB port, and I would imagine that I could share it over the network but I haven't tried it yet. (I will let you know...)
Regards.
PS - Also remember you have 30 days to return it to Dell if there is a problem. It will also come with a 1 year warranty from Dell; which I upgraded to 3; as I have heard that all in ones often have problems (any brand).
I have a Dell A960 that I tried connecting to my wireless network using a Linksys WPS54G print server. I can print a document but it gets stuck in the print queue with the status "Deleting-Printed" or "Deleted". No other jobs will print until I cancel that job in the queue AND restart my computer. I've tried many suggestions including uninstalling and reinstalling print drivers, but nothing has worked so far. I've contacted Technical Support at Dell and Linksys with no luck. I'm still trying and if I find a solution, I'll contact you. Good Luck!
