USB malfunction with printer

hello i really need help

this is kind of wierd but when i connect the printer that came with my dell computer to my dell computer i get a message saying "usb malfunction" but if i keep on trying to connect the usb cable to each usb port for a bit it will connect evenutally. But stop working once i turn off the printer or computer and when i need to use it again i have to repeat the process.

at first i was think maybe there is something wrong with the usb ports but there is no problem dectecting my mouse when i plug it in all the ports.

the printer i got with my dell is a HP 5150 the driver disk is a 5100 is this a problem? or can it be my printer?

i hope someone can help

thanks

    INKU,

Did you install the drivers before connecting the usb connectors? If you did not, then you need to remove the program, then install drivers, then insert the usb connectors.

What is your operating system? Windows 98, 2000, XP or MAC.?

Have you gotten any resolution on this?

I am having a similar problem when connecting my iPod to my system.  When I spoke with Dell, I was told I have to pay $100 to have them fix their faulty software (after owning it less than 3 months).  This is all just so the system will recognize the iPod!  I have tried both of the front USB ports and the back ones, to no avail.  Was anyone able to suggest a fix?
