hard drives

i need to replace my hard drive on my pc...its an L933r....whats the recomended hard drive to replace it?

    Any internal drive will do. I don't believe your system will support a drive larger than 120-GB. Look for an EIDE or internal ATA drive, not SATA. You may have to look around a bit to find a drive that small.

    Any standard EIDE/ATA 7200rpm hard drive, that's no more than 130gb will be suitable, try to buy one with a 8mb cache, check the warranty, there
    are one and three year warranties and some of Seagate's drives have a five year, the best in the business. 
    Don't pay more than 50cents per GB for the drive.  With OEM hard drives, you will get just the bare drive, the retail boxed version will the instructions, software and cable. 
    To go higher than 130GB you will need to install a PCI ATA/100 or 133 controller card and attach the HD to it. The controller card will overcome the limitations of the L Series BIOS.

    A student for whom I provide support has a hard drive failure SATA but I do not yet have the Dell model number of the system. Which PCs ship with SATA ?

    The student removed the SATA drive (which is RAID) and connected it inside the one Dimension XPS (same) here on campus but the Windows XP Pro did not detect the drive. He may have neglected to set "Auto" in the BIOS setup OR maybe RAID prevents this technique from working.

    Check to BIOS to see if the drive is set to "Auto" [Enabled] and you may have to partition and format it using XP's disk management. Which RAID array 0 or 1?

    Thank you. I asked the student that and they reported RAID "zero"

    Does that run on a single hard drive? If he were able to mount as secondary drive it would be to copy his documents and files before the hard drive goes away. Dell is replacing the drive itself under warranty.

    RAID 0 [Striping] hard drive cannot install it as a single hard drive, because all the data has been lost, therefore you will have partition, format, reinslall XP, drivers and applications on the drive.

    You will obtain the best price looking for specials at computer stores, such as Frys, Best Buy, these should have good rebates on EIDE/ADA hard drives.
